Three
Objectives
The Vascular and Interventional Radiology Foundation
is intent on furthering VIR development in Asia, for
which it has set three realistic goals:
1. To establish and maintain a VIR research and
training center in Hong Kong
2.
To organize VIR training courses and hands-on workshops
in Hong Kong
3.
To organize an annual international VIR conference in
Hong Kong

Training
Worldwide, VIR procedures are essentially
developed and performed by a group of doctors called
interventional radiologists, who have acquired the highly
specialized technical skills required for safe and effective
performance of VIR procedures. The slightest error can
be fatal.
Hong Kong has a limited number of interventional radiologists.
They sometimes work through the night to ensure no patient
is deprived of VIR treatment.
Unlike developed countries in the West, Hong Kong and
Southeast Asian countries have no specialized center
for VIR training and research. Presently our doctors
have to go abroad for short, expensive and infrequent
courses.
It is literally vital to have more doctors competent
in VIR therapy. For the vast number of patients, it
will mean new hope, minimized physical suffering, and
a prolonged life of high quality. Fast recovery and
improved wellbeing of patients following VIR procedures
imply a profound reduction in aftercare costs as well
as much lighter burdens on family and society. A community
of individuals and families freed from the debilitating
effect of disease will be one of vitality and productivity.
