Cerebral aneurysm

Cerebral aneurysm - an abnormal bulging of blood vessel in the brain - is a silent killer that threatens even young people. A fairly common condition, cerebral aneurysm occurs in 3.6 to 6% of the general population. It is often asymptomatic until the time of rupture, which carries a mortality rate of 50%.

In the past, the only treatment has been open brain surgery. However, not every patient can endure the trauma of such a major operation, and the aneurysm may not be accessible to surgery.

Two years ago Mrs. Wong had a profuse intracranial hemorrhage brought on by ruptured aneurysm. She went into coma, life hanging by a thread, and she was unfit for open brain surgery. Fortunately, with VIR technology doctors were able to occlude the bleeding aneurysm with platinum coils to halt the bleeding. Mrs. Wong slowly found her way to recovery. Without VIR, her chances of survival would have been minimal.
